Job Description

The Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc is currently accepting applications for two (2) seasonal “Head Camp Counsellors.”

Position Summary: 

Under the general supervision of the Camp Director, or their designate, the primary responsibility of the Head Counsellor is to oversee and assist with the effective and safe delivery of day camp programs at any of the Strathroy-Caradoc Recreation facilities.  The Head Counsellor shall work in a cooperative and positive team effort with all other staff, customers, and stakeholders for the successful delivery of Department programs and recreation facilities. The Head Camp Counsellor shall act as the on-duty supervisor in the absence of the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of Camp Staff and any Patrons
  • Assist with personnel functions like scheduling, training, and evaluating Recreation Program Team Members – Camp Counsellors. Assist with staff meetings and training programs to ensure current policy, procedures and health and safety regulations are adhered to.
  • Assist with leading the planning, implementation, and evaluation of specific day camp programs.
  • Answer staff and parent inquiries when Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director are off site.
  • Prepare day to day materials and equipment needed for activities.
  • Provide input with day camp equipment and supplies ordering.
  • Responsible for knowing, following and enforcing all departmental policies and procedures, while encouraging staff to bring ideas forward that can improve the overall operations of the Department.
  • Responsible for ensuring Camper and staff safety through the application of due diligence and risk management practices. Ensure the safe operation of municipal recreation equipment and facilities by applying safe work methods and procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring the Department’s high standard of customer service is achieved by providing excellent service, quality, and value. Responsible for ensuring and providing exceptional customer services in all duties and functions as well when dealing with campers, parents/guardians, service representatives, and agency contacts.
  • Assist in the completion and/or coordination of all summer day camp related documentation such as: accident/incident reports, behaviour reports, and complaint reports as may be required.
  • Perform such other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Experience Required

Qualifications:

Must possess the following Head Counsellor qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year of day camp experience.
  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Must have a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s licence.
  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, and practices involved in the operations of a day camp program.
  • Exceptional customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Energetic, positive attitude and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to use computers and related software.
  • Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check prior to starting employment.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation: 

Wage: $17.75 - $22.19 per hour (Band 1) + $1.00 per hour Head Camp Counsellor Premium (2025 rates)
