Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Community Engagement Specialist supports the Consultation team in the Treaties, Lands and Environment Department, helping review proposed projects for potential impacts on Chippewas of the Thames First Nation (COTTFN) rights and advancing jurisdiction within the Treaty and Traditional Territory. This entry-level role assists with organizing community engagement sessions, responding to project notices, and maintaining the Community Knowledge Keeper database. 

Candidates will be strong multi-taskers who work well independently and in a team. An OSSD or equivalent is required (college/university an asset but not required), with desirable experience in database management, communications, or project coordination however, on the job training will be provided.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support community engagement: plan, promote, and host events; coordinate logistics (space, catering) and develop materials (flyers, newsletter content); assist with broader department events as needed.
  • Screen incoming project notifications and flag key issues for Consultation Coordinators.
  • Draft and coordinate responses to proponents as assigned.
  • Prepare and track invoices for consultants/proponents in alignment with internal processes.
  • Attend meetings with proponents alongside Consultation Coordinators (virtual, on-site, or off-site; occasional evening/out-of-town).
  • Present information at meetings as needed, including the Wiindmaagewin Consultation Protocol.
  • Record, finalize, and file accurate meeting minutes and action items.
  • Digitize, upload, and index reports, notifications, and studies in the Community Knowledge Keeper (CKK) database.
  • Maintain and update CKK records (e.g., meetings, emails, decisions) and ensure data quality/consistency.
  • Support the Archaeology Field Liaison (AFL) program: organize callouts, coordinate scheduling, handle timesheets/invoices, assist with AFL training logistics, and review archaeology reports as requested.

Education

Secondary School Diploma

Experience Required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook); comfortable with Adobe Acrobat and databases.
  • Strong organizational skills: able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Works independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to get to workplace. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • College diploma or university degree in a relevant field is an asset but not required.
  • Knowledge of community, land-based knowledge, and/or experience working for a First Nation is an asset.
  • Experience with database management or mapping.
  • Event coordination and/or project coordination experience.
  • Strong written/oral communication; basic graphic design skills for flyers/newsletters (e.g., Canva/Adobe).
