Chippewas of the Thames First Nation is accepting applicants for the position of:

Adult Therapist

 

Department:           Child, Youth, and Family Well-Being Services

Hours of Work:      37.5 hours per week working onsite, 8:30am – 4:30pm

Location:               320 Chippewa Road, Muncey ON and/or London satellite office

Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of the Specialized Services Model, the Adult Therapist provides culturally safe, trauma-informed, and strengths-based counselling and therapeutic services for adults of the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation. The role addresses a range of mental health and wellness needs, including trauma, grief, addictions, stress, and intergenerational impacts of colonization and residential schools.

 

The Adult Therapist integrates traditional healing practices, ceremonies, and cultural teachings with Western therapeutic approaches to support wholistic wellness—mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical. This role also engages families and community members, working collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and interdisciplinary staff to promote healing and resilience.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual, family, and group counselling to adults experiencing mental health, emotional, or behavioural challenges.
  • Integrate as part of the care plan space for traditional healing practices (e.g., ceremony, teachings, land-based approaches, Elder/Healer guidance) with Western clinical therapies.
  • Support crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and safety planning when required.
  • Maintains clear communication and initiates debriefing opportunities with direct supervisor when required and needed. 
  • Implements and adheres to relevant best practices, policies and procedures in a professional manner.
  • Conduct assessments, develop treatment plans, and deliver culturally safe, trauma-informed interventions.
  • Draw on a variety of therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), trauma therapy, grief counselling, psychotherapy, couples and family counselling, substance use/addiction counselling, and pre- and post-intensive treatment support (e.g., PTSD, Substance Use Disorder).
  • Involve families, caregivers, and support networks in care planning when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date intake records and assessment documentation.
  • Engage in ongoing cultural learning, including participation in ceremonies and teachings to strengthen practice. 
  • Work as part of the Specialized Services team, participating in case reviews, care planning, and weekly clinical meetings.
  • Deliver services consistent with professional standards, organizational policies, and community protocols.
  • Stay current with best practices in adult mental health, trauma treatment, and culturally safe approaches.
  • Participate in evaluation, continuous quality improvement, and program planning activities.
  • Ensures an inclusive, friendly and safe environment that is supportive of all visitors and participants, accessing programs and services at current and new locations.

Education

Masters Degree

Experience Required

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or related discipline.
  • Registration (or eligibility) with a professional college (e.g., OCSWSSW, CRPO, CPO, CNO, etc.).
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience providing adult counselling and therapeutic services.
  • Experience working with First Nations adults, families, and communities.
  • Knowledge of traditional healing practices, ceremonies, and cultural teachings.
  • Must possess and maintain a clear CPIC and Vulnerable Sector Screen/Check.
