Job Description

Summary:
Under the direction of the Finance Director and in collaboration with the Comptroller, the Junior Financial Accountant supports daily accounting operations and the month-end/year-end close. The role assists with bank reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR), prepares working papers and routine financial reports, and helps ensure that financial records are accurate, timely, and compliant with internal policies and applicable legislation/regulations. The position frequently uses accounting software and spreadsheets to support the Finance Department and provides cross-functional service to program areas.

Responsibilities:
• Balance AP/AR subledgers and reconcile to the general ledger; respond to internal/external inquiries
• Prepare timely bank and credit card reconciliations; investigate and resolve reconciling items
• Post routine and adjusting journal entries with appropriate supporting documentation
• Compile and analyze weekly and monthly financial reports; prepare standard schedules for management review
• Assist with budget preparation, forecasting updates, and variance explanations
• Support adherence to the Nation’s financial administration law, federal and provincial financial regulations, funding agreements, and internal policies; help maintain accurate and complete records
• Assist senior accounting staff with internal and external audits, including preparing working papers and responding to auditor requests
• Maintain documentation for the organization’s fixed assets (additions, disposals, amortization support)

Education

Experience Required

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a college diploma or university degree in Accounting, Finance or related field and preference to candidates pursuing their CPA designation
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel; experience with Sage 300 (Accpac) or similar is an asset
  • Working understanding of Canadian GAAP/PSAS fundamentals, AP/AR processes, reconciliations, and audit support
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and organization; ability to manage multiple deadlines; strong communication and teamwork skills; commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Experience working with First Nations communities is an asset and strongly preferred.
