Job Description

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Environmental Services, and the technical direction and guidance of the Lead Hand, Environmental Services, the Environmental Services Operator will perform the day to day operations and maintenance of Water and Wastewater facilities, and linear infrastructure.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain the processes in the water distribution, wastewater treatment and wastewater collection systems in a safe and efficient manner, as licensed to perform
  • Perform cleaning, janitorial duties, maintenance, repair and replacement work on the water distribution and wastewater treatment and wastewater collection systems, while striving to advance preventative and prescriptive maintenance as a primary focus
  • Ensure that the water distribution, wastewater treatment and wastewater collection systems are measured, monitored, sampled, and tested in a manner that permits them to be adjusted when necessary, as licensed to perform
  • Ensure that all equipment to be used in water distribution and wastewater treatment and collection systems are properly monitored, inspected and evaluated and that records of equipment operating status are prepared and available at the end of every shift
  • Operate equipment required to repair or maintain the water distribution, wastewater treatment and wastewater collection systems
  • Investigate and resolve customer complaints and inquiries relating to water/wastewater services 
  • Receive and perform locates of underground utilities as required
  • Report situations requiring further actions to appropriate department or person.  Complete follow up as necessary
  • Complete logs and other record keeping mechanisms as required in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Install, repair, and/or replace water meters as required
  • Perform on-call duties as required
  • Perform as a designated OIC (Operator in Charge) as required for water and wastewater systems
  • Perform as an alternate ORO (Overall Responsible Operator) as required for all water and wastewater systems
  • Report and log equipment and material defects as required
  • Participates in hands-on and Director approved training and train staff as required.
  • Maintain reporting and records keeping; perform data entry and data analysis as required
  • Maintain public and worker safety through due diligence, safe equipment operation and applying safe work methods and procedures
  • Maintain a positive public image working with or in view of the general public
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, training and planning discussions
  • Work independently or in a team as required
  • Other related duties as may be assigned from time to time  

Education

Post Secondary Education

Experience Required

  • Successful completion of a minimum two (2) year post-secondary program in Environmental Sciences, Engineering Technology or related field, or equivalent experience

  • Minimum: Valid MECP Certification, Water Distribution and Wastewater Treatment and Collection Operator in Training (OIT) Licences

  • Preferred: Valid MECP Certification Level 1 Water Distribution and Level 1 Wastewater Treatment (includes Level 1 Wastewater Collection) Licences

  • Water meter installers certification 800A or equivalent preferred

  • Working knowledge of provincial Safe Drinking Water Act and associated regulations

  • Previous applicable knowledge and/or experience in water distribution, wastewater treatment and wastewater collection systems considered an asset

  • Knowledge of preventative and prescriptive maintenance principles for operation of Water and Wastewater facilities

  • Ability to use computers and related software including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, maintenance management work order system, and administrative (timesheet) systems

  • Excellent customer service, communication and interpersonal skills

  • Valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence with a satisfactory driver’s abstract

  • Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

  • First Aid and CPR certified, preferred

  • Confined space training considered an asset

  • Ability to use small tools and equipment

  • Able to perform physical requirements of position (e.g. lift objects up to 25 kg, work in confined spaces and in all types of weather conditions)

  • Available to work after hours

  • Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check prior to starting employment

Compensation and Benefits

Wage: As per CBA - $28.36 to $33.76 per hour commensurate with valid licensing, increasing to $31.51 to $37.51 upon successful completion of the probationary period (2025 rates). 
Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package and participation in the OMERS defined benefit pension plan.
